The Word of God is a Light

A few years ago, a tv personality a favourite of mine at that time Dr Phil said during one of his talk shows that “Monsters live in the dark.” Through years of depression, low self-esteem, fractious relationships and pornography addiction, I personally got to know what this meant. However, I have also discovered that there is a remedy to this and it is in the word of God.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet; and a light unto my path. That was the realisation of the Psalmist at this point. Indeed the word of God is light and this today is the subject of this discourse.

The Word of God is light, it has the power to drive out darkness and illuminate any shady area. In the dark, we get lost, we stumble and we fall and we lose our way. We do not know right from wrong nor do we know what to do when situations arise-but as the Psalmist says, the Word of God is a light-it illuminates the way, it provides the means with which one can know which decision to take regarding a matter. Light and darkness do not fight, it is not a competition for in the presence of light the flight of darkness is inevitable. Maybe you are thinking of the night, and for a moment you are doubting my example. A physics lesson for you—the greatest light source, the nearest to the earth the moon is no source at all, it only reflects.

But get into a dark room, one that has been unused for a while and in which wispy cobwebs dangle spookily from the ceiling to the floor. In the dark, it is easy to imagine that there is a tarantula in there, lurking behind the scenes ready and waiting to deliver to you a deadly love bite. Turn on the light and all of a sudden, from an eerie and deathly tomb, the room just becomes seen for what it is-a dirty unused room and nothing more. The darkness is gone and so are the monsters that live in it. Light is for the revelation of things, the bringing to the open of that which is hidden. In the presence of light many fears of a dark room are gone for we can see clearly.

And so is the Word—It clarifies truth, it reveals just how strong and unmatchable God is and that He is unchallengeable. And in that revelation, the fear of the devil and all his cohorts subsides for you see Him for who he really is, a foe with a defeat that is certain all the time and who is foolish enough to fight a war he cannot win. The word is Light and from the heart it can dispel the dark memories of rejection, rape, sin, and failure and in that stead bring the Light of the complete sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The Word of God can never be made to fall by the words of an enemy; the word of God cannot return to Him void so speaks Isaiah in chapter 55. Where a decision needs to be made, where a way must be chosen-the word is a light that shows the way to go.

Without the word of God, without the light of its truth many a Christian is relegated to spiritual shadowboxing—a lot of sweat, a lot of effort but with a distinct lack of end product. With the word, results are inevitable for it is light and though there may be darkness, light will always triumph over darkness. The Word of God because it is light can take you out of the darkness of self hatred, suicidal tendencies, a chain of self-destructive sexual permissiveness and immorality and anything else and bring you into the Light where there is peace, health, life prosperity and so much more. The Word is Light, and light always wins.

I don’t know just how much I have managed to make clear but I believe you will be greatly blessed by this second instalment on the Word.
